London,  25th January 2022 – Legends of Football, in aid of Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy, is to induct England manager Gareth Southgate into its Hall of Fame later this year as the star-studded event returns to London’s Grosvenor House on 3rd October 2022.

The former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough player will be officially unveiled at the prestigious event this Autumn and joins an esteemed list of recipients including Pele, David Beckham and most recently, former Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger.

On accepting the award, Gareth Southgate said, ‘It’s an absolute honour to receive the 2022 Legends of Football award. Nordoff Robbins is a brilliant charity and it’s inspiring to see all the amazing work they do to help the lives of people living with disability, illness, or isolation through the power of music. I’m a proud Ambassador of Martin House Children’s Hospice, who provide specialist care for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. Music therapy is a really vital part of the wellbeing support that Martin House provides, offering children an alternative means of emotional and sensory expression, supporting relationships and creating precious memories.’

The Legends of Football event is an annual charity fundraising night, supported by the Premier League, in aid of music therapy charity, Nordoff Robbins. The event has raised a staggering £8.5 million to date since 1997 when John Charles CBE was the first recipient. After a two year break due to the pandemic, the evening which Sir Alex Ferguson described as “The best night in the football social calendar” returns once again.

Geoff Shreeves, Sky Sports presenter and Legends of Football chairman commented, ‘‘We’re delighted to be honouring Gareth Southgate, a fitting recipient of the 2022 Legends of Football award. The recent work Gareth has done with England cannot be understated. The integration of youth, together with performances in major tournaments have brought belief back to the nation. Gareth was a true professional on the field, and a great role model off it. He is a more than deserving recipient of this award and will no doubt be a great ambassador for Legends of Football and Nordoff Robbins.’’

The award comes at a pivotal point in the England manager’s tenure, having led the Three Lions to their most successful performances at major tournaments in recent history, including the semi-final of the World Cup in 2018 and more recently, the unforgettable run to the final of Euro 2020 last summer – England’s first major tournament final in 55 years. In 2019, Southgate was awarded the OBE in recognition of his contribution to English football.

As a player, Southgate represented Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough racking up more than 500 appearances over a storied career spanning 18 years. He established himself as one of the country’s best defenders winning the league cup in 1996 and captaining Aston Villa to their last ever FA cup final in the Old Wembley Stadium. He represented England 57 times featuring in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and European Championships in 1996 and 2000.

Sandra Schembri, CEO, Nordoff Robbins: “The pandemic’s impact on events has had a significant impact on charitable fundraising for organisations like ours, so we’re thrilled that Legends of Football is back after three years, with a such high-profile recipient like Gareth Southgate on board. On behalf of Nordoff Robbins, I’d like to thank Gareth and everyone involved in the event for their hard work and dedication – every penny raised goes directly towards our music therapy delivery, helping us to change more lives through music.”
